"Regional Consultation on Local Language Computing Policy in Developing Asia"

January 22nd - 24th, 2007, Thimphu, Bhutan

Overview

Access to information is critical for human development.  This access is only meaningful to developing Asian populations if ICTs support creation and dissemination of information in languages spoken by these people. There are no easy out-of-the-box solutions for the diverse set of more than 3000 languages spoken across Asia. Localization must be individually done for each language by native speakers of the language.  Thus, localization of ICTs requires a sustained effort to build local capacity to develop these solutions and to disseminate them for use.  It is not possible to achieve this target without continued support of long-term national and regional level initiatives.

Objectives

This consultation aims to bring together researchers and policy makers to discuss this and related aspects of language computing. Presenters will share their existing national policies promoting language computing and relevant projects being undertaken so far by their respective governments.  The meeting will also be engaging the participants into discussions to document what are the best practices and formulate what would be the best way forward to provide access to developing populations across Asia.  We will look at issues related to technology, content, training, licensing and other related facets of local language computing.
