Department of Information and Technology is located at Thimphu, Bhutan and is under the ministry of Information and Communication. The deparment is divided into four divisions; application, infrastructure, promotion and the research division which looks after the PAN Localization project. The vision of D.I.T is to create and enable environment for all the Bhutanese citizens to afford and use ICT and harness the benefits of the ICT to enhance their living standard.

It takes part in promoting ICT as an enabler of national development, supporting development of reliable ICT infrastructure in the country, determining the appropriateness of the given technology and system suitable to unique Bhutanese conditions, facilitating the  promotion of good governance through the use of ICT and developing sustainable and affordable ICT facilities and services for all Bhutanese to improve their living standard.  

• NDLB (National Digital Library of Bhutan)- completion of the first phase, we have portal for digital library that includes pictures, videos and texts. It also includes dictionary with search capabilities. The digital library is also under the process of localization. It will also cover the 2008 centenary celebration.

• Completion of phase one with the launch of Dzongkha Debian Linux, version 2.0 on 28^th of August 2007.

• Main focus on training and to some extend content generation by the end user.

• Focus also on policy making or policies that can be come up regarding training and FOSS (2^nd draft) policy.

• Training manuals for linux installations, operations, open office, internet applications and others.

• Measurement and evaluation for each of the training to modal the ICT diffusion.

• Localization of domain names. (gTLDs,ccTLDs)

• Online lexicon
